One Chapter Ends...
After an engagement lasting almost 18 months Wendy and I finally realised that things just weren't going to work out between us, not with the situation as it stood then. We just had too many problems to face on top of those involved with a long distance relationship and dealing with the intricate US immigration laws.
In the middle of May, 1999 Wendy told me that she would like to break off her engagement with me. She didn't come to this decision lightly, we both knew that things had gone awry some time before, and we both knew that it might come to that if things didn't improve.
I had a strange feeling that we probably wouldn't see each other again as we waved goodbye at the end of her visit here back in January. I think we both did our mourning for our lost chance in the months after that trip, despite having high hopes as we parted. Sometimes you just have to get off the horse and check it's still breathing before trying to get it to go anywhere.
Neither of us was at fault, we just both had problems to sort out from our pasts before we could begin to look seriously to a possible future together. Perhaps if we had taken things slower at the beginning and planned further ahead it may have been a different story. I wouldn't like to lay money on it though.
It was a learning experience for us both, and we have still remained firm friends. Perhaps one day we will meet again, but as I write this we don't even have vague plans for that at present. I would like to think that we can spend some time together in the future, but I have learned to be a lot more relaxed in making plans where long distances are involved.
